In the back hallways of every public building you’ve ever been inside; nestled deep in the catacombs; behind double sided glass, in hallowed rooms inaccessible to only a select few lie the screens and monitors for these cameras; the cameras you’ve seen in parking garages, in corners, beneath impenetrable black orbs, following your every move. Speco cameras have been a leader in residential and commercial security systems. As CCTV surveillance moves out of these bowels and into eccentrically wealthy people’s homes; the same peoples homes we see on TLC or MTV or E! on any of the ‘reality programming’ that’s become so insipid after it was once enthralling; we should recognize just who it is that makes a majority of these systems and what it is that they do.

Speco Technologies is a 40+ year old innovator in the DVR and CCTV market, though they didn’t start out making security cameras. Quite the contrary; they were more heard and not seen as their first business model had them selling commercial sound systems. They sparked the movement for in-wall and in-ceiling speaker systems that are still popular today in doctors’ offices, restaurants, and retail stores.

Pioneers though they were, Speco Technologies made the move towards security technology, and then someone in Hollywood caught a glimpse of their security cameras. Compact, sleek, dangerous. Their “Bullet Series” – the svelte, long, camera shielded in black case made a splash in I can’t even remember how many Orwellian movies in the late 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. People were paranoid, Regan was in office, Russia was still Communist, and we were sure someone, somewhere was plotting in back rooms the destruction of the world. Or, at least, those long black cameras that followed us to our cars in the parking lots of shopping malls everywhere were up to some nefarious nonsense we couldn’t even understand.

It’s only now, years after their introduction that we realize the bullet model Speco cameras are just a part of the modern world we need to adjust to.
